Early History of the Ashrose Golf Club

1961- The first club meeting was on 2/11/1961, location not noted. (Indications are that the meeting may
have taken take at the CLUB ONYX, at the corner of Rose and Ashland Avenues in Baltimore City)
– 1st club President- Joe Romans
– 3 complete 18-hole scores were used to establish handicap. (Based on Clifton Park scores only)
– Dues were $5.00 per calendar year
– The first ever tournament was on 3/25/61 (Clifton Park). Outings could be held on either Saturday or
Sunday
– Meetings were held on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 3:30 p.m.
– The club account on 9/9/1961 consisted of $53.10
1962- The 1st club dance was held at Turner’s Hall on Saturday, 5/12/1962. A baby doll wrapped up in dollar
bills was raffled off.
– “Drink-on the-club” was voted in by the numbers
– Golf caps were purchased for members at $2.25 each
– Membership was limited to 36 members.
– To continue as a member in good standing, 12 scores must be recorded and verified by another
member
– A ‘rules committee’ was empowered to formulate by-laws and rules

– The club membership stood at 22 members
– The fall dance was planned for 11/16/1963 at Brewery Worker’s Hall, 6910 Eastern Avenue. Price
was $2.75 per person that included buffet, beer, and set-ups
– A sleeve of golf balls was raffled off at the 5/18/1963 meeting
– It was approved in June 1963 that a trophy was to be awarded for a hole-in-one. (Not to exceed
$10.00 in value)
1964- Club dues were raised to $8.00
– The bar tab, including tip at the 2/8/1964 meeting was $6.05
– South Hills opens for play. The club inquires as to the cost
1966- Club President- F. Manolifi
– Meetings were held every other month, with a Board of Governor’s meeting the Wednesday prior.
– 3/12/1966- President Manolifi resigned via a handwritten letter, due to a club vote to have a dance
and other money making affairs.
– The motion, “To change the name of the Ashrose Golf Club to the Ashrose Golf and Pleasure Club
was not carried by vote on 4/9/1966.
1967- Bob Oberender was accepted into the club as a new member.
– The club had a bus trip to Pleasant Valley Golf Course on 5/26/1967. Greens fees were $3.00 and
$2.00 was contributed for a tournament that day. The chartered bus cost $50.00, which included a breakfast
along the way.
